Light Curves of GRB Optical Flashes
نویسنده
چکیده
The standard model of GRB afterglows assumes that relativistically expanding material is decelerating due to interaction with the surrounding medium. The afterglows are well described by the synchrotron radiation from a forward shock, while the strong optical flash associated with GRB 990123 can be attributed to the emission from a reverse shock. We give a detailed study on the reverse shock emission. The full light curves are calculated for a long and a short GRB cases. We discuss the lack of the prompt optical detections by ROTSE for GRB 981121 and GRB 981223. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts; hydrodynamics; shock waves; relativity

Optical flashes, reverse shocks and magnetization
Despite the pre-Swift expectation that bright optical flashes from reverse shocks would be prevalent in early-time afterglow emission, rapid response observations show this not to be the case. Although very bright at early times, some GRBs such as GRB 061007 and GRB 060418, lack the short-lived optical flash from the reverse shock within minutes after the GRB. In contrast, other optical aftergl...
متن کاملOptical Flashes Preceding Grbs
Only one optical flash associated with a gamma-ray burst has been detected so far by ROTSE. There are also upper limits obtained by several groups for several bursts. Recent model calculations indicate a possibility that optical flash may precede the GRB. Such flashes are undetectable in the currently popular observing mode, with optical instruments responding to GRB triggers. There is a need t...
متن کاملOptical and GeV-TeV flashes from gamma-ray bursts
The synchrotron optical flash caught in GRB 990123 overlaps with the MeV radiation front, and the optical-emitting electrons must also produce GeV-TeV emission by inverse Compton scattering of MeV photons. The ultra-high-energy flash can be much stronger than its optical counterpart. We also note that Compton cooling by MeV photons immediately terminates the optical emission unless the fireball...
متن کاملOptical flashes and GeV-TeV flashes from gamma-ray bursts
The optical flash caught by ROTSE in GRB 990123 overlaps with the MeV radiation front. This overlapping has two implications: (1) If the flash has a synchrotron origin, the electrons emitting optical radiation must also create a GeV-TeV flash by inverse Compton scattering of the MeV photons. The high-energy flash can be much stronger than its optical counterpart and comparable with the main MeV...
متن کاملGRB 990123 a unique optical flash ?
GRB 990123 was a long, complex gamma-ray burst accompanied by an extremely bright optical flash. We find different constraints on the bulk Lorentz of this burst to be consistent with the speculation that the optical light is emission from the reverse shock component of the external shock. Motivated by this currently favoured idea, we compute the prompt reverse shock emission to be expected for ...
